Post: Technical Manager

REPORTS TO: Director, New Product Development





  • Has direct management responsibilities for engineers and designers, including appraisals, terminations, disciplinary measures, and salary recommendations.

  • Provides regular work direction to R&D team members.

  • Proactively collaborates with all relevant stakeholders in developing project proposals

  • Participates in the process to develop project scope, requirements, financial justifications, schedules, priorities, costs.

  • Represents the technical R&D team in project cross-functional team meetings

  • Ensures that product requirements are fully defined, updated, and met by the technical R&D team.

  • Develops detailed technical R&D project plans, monitors progress and assigns responsibilities to project members in order to meet project objectives

  • Evaluates and implements plans to meet objectives regarding quality, project cost, product cost, durability and timing

  • Facilitates significant design review project events

  • Identifies risks and leads resolution of design issues.

  • Ensures that corporate quality processes are coordinated and aligned in projects in order to ensure quality targets are met

  • Ensures that all aspects of product design and documentation are developed in compliance with engineering principles, company standards and other specifications

  • Collaborates with procurement on early supplier involvement to ensure component manufacturability, cost control and delivery

  • Leads multiple technical R&D project teams from project initiation through product launch

  • Facilitates all technical R&D team meetings, assigning and monitoring tasks for completion in allotted timeframe

  • Responsible for defining and codifying best practices for technical team product development and introduction processes; templates and standardization; efficiency improvements




Job Requirements


  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (B.S.M.E. preferred) or equivalent engineering education


  • Minimum of 10 years of engineering experience in mechanical and systems engineering design, including 5 or more years of management / project management experience leading multidisciplinary design teams


  • High proficiency in project management and product development processes

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with others to meet or exceed common goals

  • Highly proficient in planning, organizing, and managing multiple tasks and large projects

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead multi-discipline and multi-cultural teams

  • Demonstrated ability in sound decision-making and rationalization

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Excellent time management and organization skills

  • Good knowledge of stage-gate development processes

  • High proficiency in problem solving processes and creativity

  • High proficiency in engineering design and technical principals

  • Good knowledge of corporate financial principals

  • Ability to understand how decisions affect: sales, warranty, customer satisfaction, product safety


  • Understanding of Pro/Engineer CAD software and other development software

  • Proficiency in use of MS Access, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Project
